The original home built in 1884 by R.E. Wills
was a much simpler structure than the one that stands today. The
south section of the home was a separate house that was moved and added
years after the initial house was completed. Soon after this addition, W.W. Richardson
purchased the home and added the third floor, complete with decorative
railing.
The house has two bathrooms and a total of
seven bedrooms, including one on the third floor that served as a
nursery for years. This home features an open stairway and pillars
just inside the entryway. It also has a second stairway in the
back, with a door to the outside, that goes all the way to the third
floor. There is a settee in the dining room, a dumbbell in the
kitchen, and all the original woodwork is intact.
The following is
an excerpt from the Washington Independent newspaper, dated
6/16/1887:
"R.
E. Wills is building an elegant residence just below the long bridge in
the popular part of town."
The
Wills home has a large bay window in the living room, complete with
a seat and columns. It has ten foot ceilings, built in
bookcases, a built-in bench at the bottom of the open stairway, and
ornate woodwork. Barbara Bingman, the house's owner, is
currently working to restore the home.
