Garfield County is located in southeastern Washington and comprises a total
land mass of 710.5 square miles. (1.1% of the state's total
land mass). The
county ranks 33rd in size among Washington's 39 counties.
The northern part of
Garfield County is a rich and fertile plain of sand an silt layered over a
basalt foundation. it extends from the foothills of the Blue
Mountains to the Snake Rive. At the northern most boundaries of the
County, the Snake River has cut a n enormous canyon into the earth.
In fact, the Snake River descends as much a 2,000 feet in places along the
county's border.
Garfield County was named
in honor of President James A. Garfield and was created by an act of the
Washington Territorial Legislature on November 29, 1881.
